Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington was Director of The Cambridge Observatory from 1914 to his death in 1944, a fellow of Trinity College, and a Quaker. He is perhaps most remembered as a leading astrophysicist who proved Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity and as a philosopher and popularizer of science. As his biographer, Vibert Douglas observed: “Eddington was a man of great reserve who lived a life completely without ostentation - but as a man of science he was one of the super giants in an age of giants”.
In this talk David Robinson introduces the man, his life, his beliefs and the life he led in Cambridge. David has a distant family connection with Eddington and that is what first stimulated his interest in him. He will be bringing along some of the personal letters which Eddington wrote to his sister during his travels.

Do you have to be a pacifist? Are you all vegetarian? Do you have to believe in God? Quakers are unusual among religious groups for not having a defined creed that defines their beliefs. Instead, Quaker belief is personal and individual, but there is common ground between Quakers and beliefs that unite our community.
In this session you will hear from a few Cambridge Quakers on what they believe and how Quakerism fits into their lives. Followed by a chance for questions and discussion over a cup of tea.

Venue: Jesus Lane Quaker Meeting House
A talk by Geoffrey Durham (author of 'What Do Quakers Believe?' and 'Being a Quaker') on the visionary whose heretical beliefs electrified the nation 370 years ago and who still inspires Quakers today. He was born in 1624, and this talk is part of Cambridge Quakers’ celebration of his 400th anniversary.
George Fox was a divisive figure, a man of profound wisdom and a born communicator, whose integrity and plain speaking did much to establish freedom of speech and of worship in this country. His beliefs – there is ‘that of God’ in everyone, we have no need of priests, our teacher is within us – were considered blasphemous by the authorities and caused him to be locked up in seven different prisons over twenty-five years.
He had wisdom, energy and a deep understanding of psychology, but today his personality can feel elusive and he’s tricky to get to know. Geoffrey Durham has been fascinated by him for thirty years and will explore his character – the everyday human as well as the spiritual master – in a talk that tells the story of his life and reflects on his brilliant insights and extraordinary magnetism.

You are welcome to join us for tea, cake and conversation about death in an open, respectful and confidential space. The aim of the Death Cafe movement is to increase awareness of death in order to help people make the most of their finite lives. Everyone is welcome. Death Cafes are not for profit and have no agenda, objectives, advertising or themes - the conversations that happen are entirely dependent on the people who turn up. They are not grief support or counselling sessions. We meet simply as people, who one day are going to die.
Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to find out more to help you decide whether you'd like to come along.

Reflection and conversation on the virtue of Love, open to all, presented jointly by the Quaker and Baha'i communities.
This is a regular monthly collaborative initiative by the Quaker and Baha'i communities led by Organisational Psychologist, Katherine Lee. Especially for Open Cambridge we will be reflecting upon arguably the most important virtue of them all, Love. Each session includes a short talk and the opportunity to reflect upon the thoughts of writers, faith leaders, public figures and different faiths on a particular virtue. No particular agenda or philosophy, we offer a friendly and non-judgmental space. Our conversation ends with sharing light refreshments.

Quakers have been at the forefront of social protests throughout their history, often using disruptive and vilified methods to make change, but why does this small faith group pack such a powerful punch when it comes to peaceful protest?
This talk will answer this question through personal stories from local Quaker activists and activists who found strength in a Quaker meeting, illustrated with examples of Quaker activism from history to the present day and followed by time for questions and discussion.
